Question by triviadude77: Are there jobs available to Americans in Portugal who do not speak Portuguese?
I am trying to learn Portuguese, but can not converse in it yet. I am trying to find a job for an English-speaking American in Lisbon, Portugal. I am looking for a job so I can stay and not return to the U.S. Staying with the love of my life in the Benfica neighborhood.

    it depends on the job.
for ex, Freddy Adu, the famous US national team football player is working in Portugal – just near you, in Benfica football club – and doesn’t speak a word of portuguese.

    Hi!

It depends on your qualifications and what do you want to do.

There are lots of English Learning centers in Lisbon.
For example: British council, Wall street institute. Check the pages in english for more information. The teachers are native english speakers.

    Good luck!

How it works is like this: for any job opening, whatever local candidates there are for the job are first considered, so it’s farmed out to the Portuguese first. If they can’t find a suitable candidate among this pool of candidates, they look at what EU nationals are available – these only involve checking that they are the necessary residency permit, and that’s reasonably fast to arrange. Only if there are no suitable candidates from either Portugal or the rest of the EU, do employers start considering candidates from outside of the EU.

Your qualifications will count, so if you have a TEFL qualification and some experience, as well as a good university degree, you might have more of a chance.

Maybe in Hotels where there are a lot of tourists. Or mostly likely at the Lisbon Airport. Check job openings there. Mayeb you can check it online.
