There’s some diferences in pronunciation (like the British and the American English), mostly “caused” because lots of different people arrived in Brazil, like the africans, the italians, the germans, the polish, the french etc. There’s also differences in the writing, that had probably been “deleted” with the 2008 Grammatical Treat. There’s also different words. “Lifeguard” is “Salva-Vidas” in Brazilian portuguese and “Banheiro” (that mean bathroom in brazilian portuguese) in Portuguese from Portugal.

Also, in Brazil there’s different accents, like the one from Rio Grande do Sul (the southeast state, german and italian influence), from the Northeast (influenced by the portugueses and the dutchs) and the one from Rio de Janeiro (native and portuguese influence).

Those that say differences between European Portuguese (EP) and Brazilian Portuguese (BP) are similar to British English and American English, obviously aren’t familiar with both languages. The differences are huge.

Regarding beauty…well, that’s subjective, and I bet they were talking about accent. I’ve met some American ladies that were learning BP (as it is more advertised in the US than EP is) and as soon as they had contact with EP, they fell in love with this variant and quit studying BP. Most people prefer to study BP because it is much easier. Brazilians tend to simplify everything specially when it comes down to grammar. They also borrow a lot of words from English, therefore, it makes it very easy for English speakers to learn BP than EP.

As for the accent, check for yourself which one you prefer.

no jk, its that im from Brazil so i think that
    brazilians hate argentinians and portugese
    its kinda a competition
the accents are different, and brazilian portugese is simplified and therefore more fluid
the portugese in these two places is different, and sometimes we cannot understand each other
